The Second Continental Service Workshop on Water and Natural Resources of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa took place in Nairobi, Kenya, from March 27 to 29, 2024. The workshop convened six consortia in charge of implementing natural resources and water services, each addressing specific themes and applications critical for sustainable development across the African continent. The consortia demonstrated their innovations and contributions towards monitoring and managing vital resources. With representatives spanning regional institutions, academia, and other EO initiatives, the workshop embodied a spirit of inclusivity and diversity. The convergence of viewpoints and areas of expertise highlighted the group's dedication to using EO technologies for sustainable development.

Users need perspectives

Central to the discussion was the perspective of end-users of GMES & Africa Services and Products. Consortia explained how GMES and Africa services are tailored to meet the diverse needs of stakeholders, ranging from governmental bodies to grassroots organizations. Through insightful presentations, attendees gained a clearer picture of the products and the tangible impact these services have on optimising daily operations and decision-making processes.

For RCMRD, the Directorate of Remote Sensing and Resource Survey (DRSRS) needed a land degradation index map to help identify degraded areas in the country. The product was utilized to advise the government of Kenya through the Jazamiti Programme (re-afforestation program) launched by the President of Kenya on the highly degraded and prone areas for priority restoration and reclamation measures.

As the workshop drew to a close, participants departed with renewed vigour and a shared vision for the future of EO initiatives in Africa. Dr. Bachir Saley, the programme coordinator, encapsulated the essence of the event, emphasising the importance of continued collaboration and innovation in harnessing the transformative potential of Earth Observation.

The Workshop on Water and Natural Resources served as a testament to the power of collaboration and knowledge exchange in advancing sustainable development agendas. As the journey towards harnessing EO technologies for the betterment of society continues, the insights gleaned and partnerships forged during this workshop will undoubtedly pave the way for a brighter, more resilient future for Africa and its precious natural resources.
