About GMES and Africa Programme
The Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa Programme is a joint initiative co-funded by the African Union Commission and the European Union. It is an Earth Observation system designed to respond to global needs to manage the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure civil security. It is user-centric and provides services for the environment and security, as well as information for policy makers, scientists, businesses and the public.
Key Objectives
- Contributing to the implementation of the African Space Policy and Strategy, in particular on Earth Observation; and
- Providing decision-makers with the information and tools needed for the implementation of sustainable socioeconomic development at the continental, regional, and national levels.
- Maintaining, improving and sustaining local, institutional, human and technical capacities for accessing and using Earth Observation (EO) data and services for sustainable socioeconomic development
